Corticosteroid Injection Points
Composition : The injectable formulation is made up of most commonly methylprednisolone or triamcinolone.
Corticosteroids are typically combined with local anesthetic such as lidocaine or bupivacaine for Pain control.
Mechanism of action: Corticosteroids reduce inflammation by altering B- and T-cell function as well as stimulating HA synthesis.
Efficacy: Synovitis, effusion, or mild OA may predict the therapeutic benefit.
AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) has stated that there is inconclusive evidence to recommend for or against the use of intra-articular corticosteroids to treat knee OA.
Complications: In 3%-25% of patients, a flare may occur in the days after an injection, but this does not interfere with the therapeutic benefit.AAOS, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; HA, hyaluronic acid; OA, osteoarthritis. More Info
